While It may remain disputable on what is the correct pronunciation of “Brighid” is, one cannot deny the name is quite the conversation starter. The name itself has served as an “ice breaker” when being introduced to someone new.
well my name is spelled, “Bridghid” but I am pretty sure i’m named after the saint. Does that count?
I agree completely. Live in Ireland & struggle to get people to pronounce my name correctly. Absolutely hate the harsh strong Bridget which my mum says is a Swiss name. So I am a pronounced as Breege or as previous contribuitor noted that the GH is silent and the d at end is soft, thanks Brighid
Well most people in America have theirs spelled with a “t” but it’s pronounced with a soft g (my names brigid so I got some experience to back it up…. Just trust me)
The correct modern spelling is “Bríd”. The older spelling is “Brigid” (there would’ve been a dot over the g), and later Brighid (a H instead of the dot). All 3 spellings are pronounced the same – i.e. the G and the GH are silent.
Bridget – is an English translation and is not Irish. Don’t confuse the Irish spelling (older version) with the English word.
The Saint and the correct pronounciation is with a hard “G” . Just like in America the word Celtics, in association with the Boston basketball team, is pronounced with a soft “c” yet it is correctly pronounced with a hard “C” sound. The same as Brigid. One person tells another thus is how it is said but nobody researches it. We need to stop using any citation without checking it first. Here is a good one:

The Saint and correct pronounciation of Brigid is with a hard “G” not the soft “bridge” way. Just like Americans pronounce the Boston basketball team, the Celtics, with a soft “c” sound not the correct hard “C”. Same mistake.
