What does Desmond mean?

Desmond is an anglicized form of Deasmhumhain, “South Munster,” from deas “south” and Mumhain, the Irish name for Munster. Desmond was a medieval kingdom in the south of Munster, one of Ireland’s four provinces, ruled by the MacCarthys. After the Anglo-Norman invasion its eastern half became the Earldom of Desmond, held by the FitzGeralds.

As a personal name it goes back to Deasmhumhnach, “native of Desmond,” and to the Cork surname Ó Deasmumhnaigh, “descendant of the man from Desmond.” Des and Dessie are the usual short forms. A famous modern bearer was the South African archbishop Desmond Tutu (1931–2021).
