Aibhlinn is a spelling of Aibhilín, the Irish form of the Norman name Aveline, which in English became Evelyn and Eveleen. Aveline was a diminutive of the Germanic Avila, from an Old German element awi whose meaning is unknown, so the popular gloss “wished-for” or “longed-for child” has no firm basis.
In 1923 the name scholar Patrick Woulfe treated Aibhilín as a variant of Eibhlín (Eileen) and gave Aileen, Eveleen and Evelyn as its English forms. Several women named Aibhilín who died between 1498 and 1583 appear in Irish historical records.
