What does Blaithin mean?

Bláithín means “little flower,” from the Irish bláth, “flower,” with the diminutive ending -ín. It is a modern form of Bláthíne, the name used in some versions of the Ulster Cycle for Bláthnat, wife of the warrior Cú Roí. In the story she loves Cú Chulainn and helps him overcome her husband by pouring milk into the River Finglas as a signal.

The English scholar Robin Flower, who spent time on the Blasket Islands learning Irish, was known there as Bláithín, and he is still often called by that name in Ireland.
