What does Ealga mean?

Ealga comes from the Irish ealga, an old literary word meaning “noble.” It is best known from Inis Ealga, “noble island,” one of the poetic names for Ireland. The 17th-century historian Geoffrey Keating listed Inis Ealga as the third of Ireland’s ancient names, explaining that ealga is equivalent to uasal, “noble,” and that the name was used in the time of the Fir Bolg.

As a given name Ealga is a modern and rare choice, taken from this poetic name for Ireland. The sense “brave,” sometimes added to it, is not found in Irish dictionaries.

Ealga is rare in Ireland. Since 1964, fewer than three baby girls a year have been registered with the name, so it doesn't appear in the Central Statistics Office's baby name tables.
