What does Muirgheal mean?

Muirgheal comes from the Old Irish Muirgel, from muir “sea” and geal “bright,” so “sea-bright” or, as Patrick Woulfe put it in 1923, “fair one of the sea.” It is the Irish original of Muriel, which is also linked to the Scottish Gaelic Muireall. A Breton form was brought to England after the Norman Conquest, and Muriel was popularized again by Dinah Craik’s 1856 novel John Halifax, Gentleman. English variants include Meriel and Meryl.

An early bearer appears in the Chronicon Scotorum: Muirgel, daughter of the ninth-century High King Máel Sechnaill mac Máele Ruanaid, who with a Norse ally was behind the killing of a son of the Viking leader Auisle around 883.
