Páidí is a pet form of Pádraig, the Irish form of Patrick, which comes from the Latin Patricius, “nobly born” or “of the patrician class.” Rev. Patrick Woulfe’s Irish Names and Surnames (1923) gives Paddy as its English equivalent, and it is also anglicized as Paudie.
Traditionally an everyday name for boys christened Pádraig, Páidí is now registered as a first name in its own right. Its best-known bearer is Páidí Ó Sé (1955–2012) of Ceann Trá (Ventry), County Kerry, who won eight All-Ireland senior football medals with Kerry and later managed the county to All-Ireland titles in 1997 and 2000.
