What does Sheenagh mean?

Sheenagh is a spelling of Sheena, the anglicized form of the Gaelic Síne (Irish) or Sìne (Scottish Gaelic), both forms of Jane. Jane comes from the Old French Jehanne, a feminine form of the Latin Iohannes (John), which goes back to the Hebrew Yochanan, “God is gracious.” The Sheenagh spelling is mainly Scottish, and Sheena spread beyond Scotland in the 1980s through the singer Sheena Easton.

In Ireland, Patrick Woulfe’s Irish Names and Surnames (1923) describes Síne as a variant of Sinéad, another Irish form of Jane, and notes that it was in use in County Derry.
