What does Tomas mean?

Tomás is the Irish form of Thomas, a biblical name that comes through Greek from the Aramaic Teʾoma, “twin.” Thomas was one of the twelve apostles, remembered as the one who doubted that Jesus had risen until he saw him for himself.

In Ireland the name was very common among the early Anglo-Normans, out of devotion to Saint Thomas Becket, the 12th-century archbishop of Canterbury and martyr. Notable bearers include Tomás Ó Criomhthain (1855–1937) of the Great Blasket Island, whose memoir An tOileánach (The Islandman) is a classic of Irish-language literature, and Tomás Mac Curtain (1884–1920), the Lord Mayor of Cork who was killed at his home in 1920.
