What does Tiarnan mean?
Tiarnán comes from tiarna “lord” with the diminutive -án, so “little lord.” It is the modern spelling of the older Tighearnán, and its anglicized form is Tiernan. Tierney comes from the same root.
St. Tiarnán founded a monastery at Errew, on Lough Conn in County Mayo, in the early sixth century. The name was long common among the O’Rourkes: Tighearnán Ua Ruairc, twelfth-century king of Breifne, helped drive his rival Diarmait Mac Murchada from the kingship of Leinster in 1166, and Diarmait’s return with Norman help began the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland.
