What does Aednat mean?

Aednat, spelled Áednat in early medieval Irish and Aodhnait later, is a feminine diminutive of Áed (modern Aodh), an old name meaning “fire.” It is the female counterpart of Áedán, now Aidan, so “little fire” is a fair gloss. Aodh itself was a very popular name in early Ireland, borne by figures of myth and by several high kings.

Aodhnait was the name of an early Irish saint whose feast was kept on November 9. It is not clear that the name stayed in use after the early Middle Ages, but it was in use in 19th-century Ireland, where it was anglicized as Enat, Ena and Eny.

Aednat is rare in Ireland. Since 1964, fewer than three baby girls a year have been registered with the name, so it doesn't appear in the Central Statistics Office's baby name tables.
