What does Ailbhe mean?

Ailbhe comes from the Old Irish name Ailbe, whose origin is uncertain. It may come from a Celtic root meaning “white” or “bright.” A medieval life of Saint Ailbe explained it as ail, “rock,” and beo, “living,” but scholars treat that as a folk etymology.

In legend, Ailbhe was a daughter of King Cormac mac Airt. In the tale Tochmarc Ailbe (The Wooing of Ailbe), she answers the riddles of Fionn mac Cumhaill so cleverly that she becomes his wife. Saint Ailbe of Emly, a patron saint of Munster, was a man, and the name was long given to both sexes. Today it is mostly a girl’s name.
