What does Eoin mean?
Eoin is an Irish form of John. It comes through Latin Iohannes and Greek from the Hebrew Yochanan, “God is gracious.” In Irish it is the name of every John in the Bible, including Eoin Baiste, John the Baptist, and John the Apostle, and it has been in use in Ireland since early Christian times. Seán is a later Irish form of John, taken from the Old French Jehan.
Eoin is a separate name from Eoghan, which has its own origin. Well-known bearers include the scholar Eoin MacNeill (1867–1945), a founder of the Gaelic League who was born John McNeill, and the children’s author Eoin Colfer, creator of Artemis Fowl.
